Label TextThis sculpture is a cast of a preliminary sketch and competition model that Waugh submitted to the Section of Painting and Sculpture of the U. S. Treasury Department in October 1935. The resulting commission, which Waugh won, was for a larger statue (50 ¾" high) for a niche in the south anteroom in the Department of the Postmaster General's reception room in the Department of the Post Office Building in Washington. In Waugh's contribution, a stern-visaged, full-length, male figure stands and faces forward. He wears the historical garb of the postman of the early Federal period, which includes a great-coat, boots, and a strapped pouch.
