Label TextThis work was accepted under the title Cape Ann, although it has subsequently been referred to as Coast of Cape Ann.
Although Waugh was a rapid painter, his works were not painted directly from nature. After studying the ocean and coastline, Waugh sketched in his composition and painted the work in the studio. Always seeking some dramatic or memorable theme, Waugh has chosen a turbulent ocean and rugged outcrop of rocky shoreline for his depiction of the coast of Cape Ann, Massachusetts. With its spume of water breaking in the background, and the broadly rendered crags and planes of the rock Cape Ann recalls the late marine paintings of Winslow Homer.
