Label TextAugustus Saint-Gaudens' early reputation was founded on his low-relief portraits such as this depiction of his French contemporary Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884). The influence of Bastien-Lepage's innovative realism on American art was considerable, despite his early death, and Saint-Gaudens' portrait soon became a cherished memorial. "paint in clay"-to combine a Bastien-Lepage encouraged Saint-Gaudens to painterly and sculptural approached to the human figure.
