Label TextThis is a second version of the portrait of Manship (private collection) occasioned by the sculptor's election as an Associate in March 1914. The first was completed in April 1915. According to the artist's record book B, then the varient was executed for presentation to the National Academy. The first version, now in a private collection, remained in Bellows's possession, and was listed as part of his estate. A thumbnail sketch of it in record book B, suggests the reason for a second portrayal. In the initial sketch, Manship is depicted full face. However, in the first painted version the sculptor is depicted in almost three quarter view. Bellows would recreate a work if he were not pleased with his results. Presumably, he was not satisfied with this first rendering, and in the second version returned to a pose closer to his initial conception of the subject.
Bellows's friendship with Manship may have developed at the National Arts Club, where both were members. The sittings for the work took place at Bellows's home and studio at 146 East Nineteenth Street.
