Label TextFor November 16, 1920, the Academy minutes read: "That the portrait of Henry Prellwitz by Irving R. Wiles be accepted with thanks. Mr. Prellwitz became an Associate of the NAD in 1906, through the SAA and qualified as an Academician in 1912."
Wiles met Prellwitz while a student at the Art Students League. Prellwitz became an Academy Associate through the 1906 merger with the Society of American Artists. Because of his conditions of admission, he was not required to submit a diploma portrait. He nevertheless chose to do so, fourteen years later.
