Label TextWiles, a slender, short man, was often described as "frail-looking." When exhibited, his "Self-Portrait" received lukewarm but consistent praise as an accurate likeness. Susan Hayes Ward, however, commented, "Mr. Irving Wiles's portrait of himself is an admirable piece of work, but it is extremely unattractive as a picture. It is painted in profile, with the head thrust forward as it must have been when he peered at himself in the looking-glass."
