Label TextKnown primarily as a representational painter, Romano's work took a decided shift toward abstraction at the time of his election to the National Academy in the mid-1950s. The change was so dramatic that it prompted one journalist to write, "...it is rather ironical that this artist who only last year was elected to full membership in the National Academy of Design...should now be included in the ranks of the abstractionists."
