Label TextThe model for this work was Miller's friend, the artist Adelaide Lawson Gaylor. The painting reflects the artist's mastery of Italian Renaissance forms, composition, technique, craftsmanship, and symbolism. Lloyd Goodrich remarked upon the artist's "peculiar combination of naturalism and classicism," and noted that his "characteristic compositions of women have a monumental largeness and power. His art is essentially classic in its order, balance and sense of solidarity with the past."
