Label TextThough the Academy received two landscapes by Robbins, this painting is the only work currently in the collection which is attributable to him. (This painting cannot be securely identified as either the diploma work or the Wolcott D. Robbins' gift. The 1879 Council Minutes do not provide a description of the diploma work.) (ABG: note with this, a question of omitting words in parenth.) The Robbins' gift is referred to as a view of Mount Katahdin, Maine, but the mountain in this painting is too generalized to be identified as Katahdin. However, the large size of this painting suggests that it is the later gift rather than the diploma work, as large scale works were discouraged for diploma presentations because of limitations on storage space. However the mountain does appear to be a representation of Mt. Katahdin. The composition and viewpoint of this landscape, while fairly standardized, do bear resemblance to "Mt. Ktaadn" (1853) by Robbins' friend, Frederick E. Church.
