Label TextAfter achieving recognition as a landscape painter in Albany, New York, Boughton moved to New York City in 1858 to study figure painting at the National Academy. The following year he traveled to France, where he studied with Edouard Frère at Ècouen. By 1862, Boughton had moved to London, where he remained until his death.

Boughton became known in England for his idyllic scenes of young women in the English countryside. In this genre painting the young woman and child wear costumes from the era of Napoleon's First Empire, an indication of the artist's fondness for looking back to other times for inspiration for his subject matter. Boughton became best known for his genre scenes of the 1860s depicting early American literature and history, particularly of the daily life of the colonial era.
