Label TextKnown primarily as a painter of figures, George Henry Boughton got his start in New York as a landscapist. "Winter Scene" is one of a handful of winter scenes he executed that demonstrate his abilities to blend frozen streams, snow-covered ground, and frosty atmosphere into a nuanced tonal composition. Boughton later had a highly successful career both in England and America, but at this still early stage he received needed patronage and encouragement from Suydam.
