Label TextAnshutz regularly centered his paintings on the female figure in his work from around the turn of the 19th century. As here, the figure is usually portrayed with a contemplative attitude. This work was exhibited at the National Academy’s 1908 annual exhibition as The Breaker. According to the art critic James Huneker, “Doubtless the shimmering rhythmic waves of the fabric suggested the title.” The flounces of the dress as they cascade to the floor in deep, full folds are key both to the artist’s conception and his technical execution of the piece.
