Label TextIf the Portrait of a Gentleman shown in the Academy annual of 1840, and noted as belong to Mooney, was a self-portrait, it would have been a likely candidate for presentation to the Academy that spring as his ANA diploma presentation. Certainly, the Academy possessed a self-portrait by Mooney available for him to show in Philadelphia two years later. In July 1847, Mooney requested permission of the Council to make an exchange for this diploma portrait "then hanging in the exhibition." It is not recorded whether the request was approved, and if so, whether Mooney carried through his intention, thus leaving some doubt whether the painting presently in the collection is the same as that originally received.
A photograph of this painting held in Academy files confirms that it has been cut down, probably from the requisite diploma portrait size, thirty by twenty-five inches.
