Label TextIn all likelihood, this work is a portrait of the actress Helen Jennings (1883-1914), wife of the painter Henry Ward Ranger. A letter from Brownell Ranger, the son of Jennings by a previous marriage, indicates the Academy collection contained a portrait of his mother by Sewell. Additionally, The Academy's files contain a photograph of Jennings, which offers visual confirmation of the attribution.
