Label TextPomona, guardian of the apple orchard in Roman mythology, is shown here as an idealized nude woman, seated on the ground, her head turned over her right shoulder. Her left leg, which is raised toward her body, is covered with a swath of drapery which also passes under her and loops over her right arm. In her right hand, which rests on a basket, she holds a piece of fruit, no doubt an apple.
According to Beatrice Proske, this sculpture was conceived in 1929 and carved into marble in 1937. A half-size model in bronze, possibly the Academy's version, won an honorable mention at the New Haven Paint and Clay Club in 1935. The larger, marble version of the sculpture is in the collection of Brookgreen Gardens, Murrels Inlet, South Carolina.
