Label TextPol sek's diploma portrait was painted in Chicago during the winter of 1927 specifically for the National Academy. The sculptor depicted himself in a Moravian embroidered shirt with one of his scupltures (Maiden of the Roman Campagna) in the background. He had had little or no experience in painting in oils but decided to execute the work himself when he was unable to find a painter suitable for the task. According to Sherwood, Pol sek sent the finished portrait to the Academy "in a richly carved frame of [his] original Slavonic design."
