Label TextThe Academy's 1911 catalogue of its collection published this work as a self-portrait, and the attribution was perpetuated through subsequent registration reviews. However, the portrait's identification as being by Blondell when it was exhibited by the Academy in the year it was acquired, added to the facts of there being no record of any later substitution of Hart's diploma portrait and Hart's exclusive association as a landscape painter leaves no doubt that the 1911 attribution was in error.
Hart and Blondell were elected Associates in the same year. Hart was the lender of A Boy by Blondell to the Academy annual exhibition of 1857.
