Label TextThe artist and National Academician G. Glenn Newell arranged through a mutual friend, Mary Phelps, the donation of this portrait to the Academy; he dated the work to about 1898. Phelps wrote Academy president Henry Hobart Nichols that she believed Mary Hart "had great talent which was somehow kept from proper fulfillment and recognition. She never functioned as I feel she was capable of doing and therefore this portrait is one example of her real worth."
Hart received the Norman W. Dodge Prize for this portrait when it was shown in the Academy's annual exhibition of 1901.
