Label TextSamuel Isham's "Urania" illustrates the convergence of naturalism and allegory in the human figure during the American Renaissance. Trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, Isham developed a great appreciation for and familiarity with art history, a subject that he taught at the National Academy and Columbia University. His rigorous education influenced his choices of allegorical subjects and lent a feeling of intellectual seriousness to his art. In Isham's composition, "Urania," the Greek muse of astronomy, contemplates her astral globe, the contour of her head echoing the sphere in her hand.
