Pond's father founded the piano firm of Ivers and Pond. He was educated at the Worcester Academy and then studied at the Boston Museum School with Tarbell and Benson and abroad. He was in Paris when the first World War broke out and served there in the Red Cross Ambulance Service. Pond also painted in Spain, and maintained a studio in New York while still basing himself at his family home in Winchester.
He did a series of WWI officers' portraits for one of the important military schools.
