Elaine de Kooning studied in New York at the Leonardo da Vinci Art School, the American Art School, the Academy school, and with Willem de Kooning. A participant in the innovative abstract expressionist movement, her first one-artist exhibition occurred at the Stable Gallery in New York in 1952. Solo shows of her work were thereafter presented almost annually at a wide range of institutional and commercial galleries throughout the country, including exhibitions at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and Washington (D. C.) Gallery of Modern Art in 1964.
She taught at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York; the University of Georgia, Athens; the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut; University of California at Davis; Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and in New York at the Cooper Union, Parsons School of Design, and Pratt Institute. She received honorary degrees from the Maryland Institute, Baltimore; Adelphi University, Brooklyn, New York; Moore College of Art, Philadelphia; and Western College, Oxford, Ohio.
