Woelfle studied at the Brooklyn Institute and at the Art Students League under Twachtman, Cox, Beckwith and Mowbray. He also studied at the National Academy School under C.Y. Turner and Will Low and in Europe at the Paris and Munich Academies. He spent about ten years abroad.
In 1907 he married Georgiana Voorhees. He was an instructor at the Mechanics Institute, New York City, for five years; at the Castle School in Tarrytown, New York; three years at the Kingsley School in New Jersey; as well as summer classes in Provincetown and Europe. At his death he was teaching portrait and figure painting at the Grand Central School of Art. He executed a 125' mural in the Court House at Youngstown, Ohio.
