Gikow studied at the Cooper Union in New York, and with John Steuart Curry and Raphael Soyer. Her awards included a Yaddo Fellowship and a grant from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration she executed a mural for Bronx (New York) Hospital. wa known as a painter and a printmaker. Gikow taught painting at New York's New School for Social Research from 1965 into 1969. She was known as a printmaker as well as painter, and was married to th artist, Jack Levine.
