Lloyd Lillie began his art studies at the Corcoran School of Art, Washington, D.C., and attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1955-57. He then studied for two years at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he received a diploma with highest honors. Upon finishing his work at the there, he was awarded the Clarissa Bartlett Traveling Fellowship which allowed him to live and work in Florence, Italy, for fourteen months. In 1990, he was awarded a fellowship from the Camargo Foundation, Cassis, France. He also won a bronze medal from the National Sculpture Society in 1991.
Lillie has received numerous public commissions. The James Center, Richmond, Virginia, commissioned Seafarers from him in 1987 and the Women's Rights Museum, Seneca Falls, New York, gave him a commission for nineteen life size figures. His work is at the Boston Public Library and the American Embassies in North Yemen and Riyahd, Saudi Arabia. He has taught at Boston University since 1961, attaining the rank of professor.
