Chavez studied at the Colorado Springs (Colorado) Fine Arts Center. His first one-artist exhibition was presented by the Denver (Colorado) Art Museum in 1937. In addtion to being a painter, he works extensively in three-dimensional form, often combining materials such as wood, metal, stone and plastics. He has executed murals for United States post offices in Center, Texas; Geneva, Nebraska; Glenwood Springs, Colorado; and for public buildings in Denver, in Fort Warren, Wyoming, and in Recife, Brazil.
Among Chavez's awards are: Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, 1948; a Fullbright grant in painting, 1951, which provided for travel to Italy; and a prize in sculpture from the Albany (New York) Institute of History and Art. He has taught at the Art Students League, New York, 1954, and at the League's summer school, 1955-58; the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, 1959; and Syracuse (New York) University, 1960-61.
Chavez resides in Woodstock, New York.
