for Herbert Jacob Gute

Gute studied at the Pratt Insitute in Brooklyn, New York, and received his bachelor's degree in fine arts from Yale university in 1933. He then traveled to Syria to copy the frescoes at Dura Europus; a selection of these copies were exhibited on the occasion of the opening of the Jewish Museum in New York in 1947. He taught at Yale and, during World War II, served as an illustrator for the Army, Air Force, and Navy Bureau of Aeronautics. After the war, he achieved prominence as a watercolorist and exhibited his works frequently in New England. He became a full professor at Yale in 1958.
