De Niro studied first with Ralph Pearson, in 1940 with Hans Hofmann at Black Mountain College ***, and in 1942 with Josef Albers. Peggy Guggenheim presented the first one-man exhibition of his work in 1946, at her New York gallery, Art of This Century. Since 1950 his strongly-colored, abstracted figure paintings, his sculptures, and drawings have been consistently shown in one-man, as well as group, exhibitions in New York, other American cities, and abroad.
His awards include a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, and residency appointments to both the Mac Dowell and Yaddo art colonies. In New York he has served on the faculties of the New School for Social Research, the School of Visual Arts, Cooper Union, and the New York Studio School; he has also taught at State University of Pennsylvania, University Park. De Niro lives and works in New York; he is represented by the Graham Modern gallery.
