Landscape painter George Matthew Bruestle was born to German parents in New York City in 1871. He studied at the Art Students League with H. Siddons Mowbray and J. Carroll Beckwith before traveling to Paris. His French instructors included Gustave Courtois at the Acad‚mie Colarossi and Benjamin Constant at the Acad‚mie Julian. Bruestle married Emma Thomason in 1901. His election as an Academy Associate came late in life, in 1927. He died at Lyme CT in 1939.
