Geraldine Ricci was the daughter of Ulysses A. Ricci and Alma C. Ricci. She graduated from Mount St. Mary's Academy in Plainfield, NJ. She studied at the New York School of Applied Design and at the Art Students League. In 1948 she married the artist Arnold W. Knauth II. They lived in Rockport, MA.

Ricci first studied sculpture and then turned to watercolor. Before this portrait was submitted to the National Academy, it was exhibited at the Rockport Art Association where it was awarded the Judge Abraham E. Pinanski Memorial Prize.
