Newman's father was a hardware manufacturer. He attended New York City public schools and the City College of New York from 1890 to 1892, when he joined his father's business. He then studied sculpture under J. Q. A. Ward from 1898 to 190l.
One of his first works, The Hiker, of 1904, a Spanish-American War Memorial, was erected at Shenley Park, Pittsburg, and later reproduced elsewhere by the United Spanish War Veterans. He became a member of the National Sculpture Society since 1907. Among Newman's many commissioned works are: the Henry Hudson Monument at Riverside Drive and 72nd Street in New York, erected by the Colonial Dames; the marble figures Night and Day for the Harriman National Bank and Trust Company; a bronze group, Triumph of Peace, Atlanta, Georgia; General Philip Sheridan Monument, Scranton, Pennsylvania; Joel Chandler Harris Monument, Atlanta; Monument Group to Women of the South, Jacksonville, Florida; and the Koehler Memorial, U. S. Military Academy, West Point. Newman's last major work, a marble frieze on the history of medicine, executed for the Jersey City Medical Center was completed in 1937.
