for Jennette Shepherd Harrison Loop
1840 - 1909
Jenny Loop came from a distinguished Connecticut family. She studied in New Haven with Wales Hotchkiss and George Durrie. She had set up a practice in portraiture in New Haven before coming to New York in 1863 to continue her studies with Henry Loop. She married her teacher less than two years later. In 1867 the couple went abroad for an extended stay, visiting Rome, Paris, and Venice; the young Mrs. Loop used this time to pursue her art studies, although whether she enrolled in any formal school or atelier is not recorded.
Mrs. Henry Augustus Loop, the name under which she exhibited, was first represented in an Academy annual in 1866; she also showed in the annual of 1867, but did not again participate until 1871, several years after the couple's return from Europe, suggesting she was preoccupied with establishing a home and family. She seems soon to have become established as a professional portraitist, children being her particular specialty, for she rarely missed showing in Academy exhibitions from 1871 through 1905.
The Loop's had four daughters; Edith, born in 1873, also became a portrait painter.
