John Williams Taylor studied with J. Francis Smith and S. MacDonald-Wright in California; later with Boardman Robinson at the Art Students League. Among his honors were: a Gold Medal, the American Watercolor Society; the John Barton Payne Medal and Purchase Award, the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Richmond; and a grant, the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He executed a mural for the U.S. Post Office, Richfield Springs, NY. His paintings are in public collections such as: The Whitney Museum of Fine Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Indianapolis Art Museum, Indiana; and the Currier Gallery of American Art, Manchester, NH. Among his teaching positions were the Art Students League and the John Herron Museum School, Indianapolis, Ind.
