for Robert Swain Peabody

Peabody graduated from Harvard College in 1866. In 1868 he began studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Daumet. Two years later he and John G. Stearns established the architectural firm of Peabody and Stearns in Boston, a partnership that was sustained for forty-five years. They designed a number of public buildings including the Wentworth Institute and the Custom House Tower in Boston; Groton School, Groton, Connecticut; City Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts; the State House, Concord, New Hampshire; and the Union League Club in New York. Peabody was president of the Boston Society of Architects. He wrote a number of books on travel and architecture.
