for Louis Frederick Berneker
American, 1872 - 1937
Berneker attended the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and the Acad‚mie Julian in Paris under Jean Paul Laurens.
Alphaeus Cole, in recommending Berneker for membership in the NAD, described his career:
Mr. Berneker is well known for his poetic treatment of the nude in his imaginative easel pictures, many of which have been exhibited in the National Academy of Design. He is however versatile, painting landscapes, portraits, and decorations with the same facility. His best known decorations are the large murals in High School #60 in the Bronx, also those of the Church of St. Gregory the Great at West 90th Street. Theatre goers will remember his charming decorations in the Belmont Theatre of this city, also those of the foyer of the Erlanger Theatre of Philadelphia, as well as the large murals in the Chicago Theatre of Chicago in which he shows great appreciation of the architectural requirements of the building. Mr. Berneker is a life member of the National Arts Club, and also of the New York Watercolor Club and of the Allied Artists of America as well as the Salmagundi Club. He is represented in the permanent collection of the Dallas Museum of Art as well as numerous private collections.
This portrait was accepted with notation that it was unfinished but would be completed shortly. Another portrait of Berneker in the collection, by Alphaeus P. Cole and dated 1931, is not referenced in minutes; it is likely it is a de facto replacement diploma portrait for this by Mrs. Berneker
