Breinin studied at the Vitebsk Academy of Fine Arts before coming to the United States at the age of twelve. His formal artistic training was at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Long a resident of Chicago, and frequent exhibitor in the Art Institute's exhibitions, his paintings received a number of awards in those exhibitions. Among other prizes are those conveyed in exhibitions of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; the Bloomington (Indiana) Art Association; the Univeristy of Illinois; and a purchase prize in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Artists for Victory exhibition of 1942. In addition to easel paintings in oil, and watercolors Breinin executed murals for the federal government projects, and has designed ballet sets and costumes. He has served on the faculties of the Southern Illinois Univerity, Edwardsville; the University of Minnesota, *** ; the Art Students League, New York; and the Academy school from 1967 to 1980. He presently resides in Scarsdale, New York.
