Label TextAndrew Ginzel is an artist whose work by its very nature defies definition. For more than twenty years he has been one-half of Jones + Ginzel, a collaborative partnership with Kristin Jones that creates public and environment-based installations often with a strong conceptual framework. Much of Ginzel's work addresses temporal issues, often in poignant, sensitive, and insightful ways. "Telesis" exemplifies the artist's practice. While he has worked in just about every medium under the sun, intricate collaged drawings are at the core of his practice. In his own words, these works “are the genesis of all of the thinking and constitute the visual basis that feeds projects in video and large-scale sculpture.” "Telesis," which comes from the Greek word Telos, meaning “end,” incorporates a collaged Roman Republican bust with a map of Eastern Germany at the bottom stacked portions of Japanese characters and series of small horizontal mirrors. The piece is punctuated by a whirlwind of drawing that emanates from the divided head and seems to connect all of the various elements. Andrew has won numerous awards and fellowships including Yaddo (multiple times), MacDowell (multiple times), the Rome Prize, an NEA fellowship, and many others. In addition, Andrew is on the faculty at the School of Visual Arts.
