Label TextEmma Amos' work is often located at the intersection of culture and politics. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Amos studied at Antioch College and received an M.A. from New York University. Amos was the youngest and only female member of Spiral, a legendary Civil Rights art group co-founded by Hale Woodruff, Romare Bearden, and other prominent African-American artists. The human body has been central to Amos' art and "Faith and Giza" is from her "Falling" series begun in the 1980s. The two twisting figures that seem to both float and fall in the top and bottom of the piece refer to the artist's friends, Faith Ringgold and Giza Daniels-Endesha.
