Label TextGaul relied on his collection of uniforms and military paraphernalia to help him depict scenes from the civil war with great accuracy of detail. Here he presents two Union soldiers who have become separated from their troops, talking about which direction to take-presumably to get safely back to their own lines. This painting was one of several military subjects Gaul exhibited in the 1882 Academy annual.
