Label TextBecause Flagg entered the Academy as an honorary member, he was not required to present a portrait of himself. When elected an Academician he chose to submit this work as his qualifying presentation rather than one of his historical paintings. He thus simultaneously honored the Academy's desire to sustain a portrait record of members, confirmed his election, and perhaps also recognized that it seemed to be his work as a portraitist that was the more admired by the Academy.
