Label TextAt her death in 1892, Elizabeth Perkins Fogg widow of William Hayes Fogg (d. 1884), bequeathed $30,000 to the Academy, stipulating that the funds be used for the creation of a sculpture of her husband, a New York merchant and philanthropist, who had endowed the art department of Harvard University. Ward, who had already modeled a marble bust of Fogg (Union Theological Seminary, New York) in 1886 was commissioned to execute this over life-size full-length portrait. Olin Warner, Walter Shirlaw and Robert Blum inspected the finished work in Ward's studio in January 1896 and gave a favorable report of it to the Academy's Council. It was delivered to the Academy later that month and unveiled in March, 1896, during the ceremonies which opened the 71st Annual Exhibition.
