Label TextVedder was an enthusiastic admirer of Egypt's cultural history and unique landscape. While visiting the country in 1890, he took a boat trip along the Nile during which he created this drawing, one in a series of thirty collectively entitled "Up the Nile." The group included depictions of such sights as the Sphinx, a ruined mosque, a cemetery, and several tombs. The nuanced, yet colorful overcast sky and deep shadows of this work, however, suggest the Egyptian landscape's mystery phrased in meteorological terms alone.
