Label TextThis work was assigned the date of 1866 in the catalogue of the 1937 American Academy exhibition of Vedder's work. As is indicated in the inscription, Vedder was traveling and sketching in France with the American artist Charles Caryl Coleman in the years after the Civil War when he exectued this and a number of other small compositions depicting Vitre and the landscape around it.
