Label TextJasper Cropsey is best known for his idyllic scenes of brilliant autumn foliage and pastoral New England life. "Coast Scene," in contrast, depicts a tumultuous seascape off what is believed to be Newport, Rhode Island. "In its grandest moods," Cropsey wrote in his 1855 essay "Up Among the Clouds," the storm cloud is "more impressive than all the other cloud regions-awakening the deepest emotions of gloom, dread, and fear; or sending thrilling sensations of joy and gladness through our being."
