Label TextBank of the Wissahickon probably served as a preparatory study for Richards’ painting June Day (1870, Cleveland Museum of Art). The artist frequently sketched along the Wissahickon Creek near Germantown. His graphite drawings of the area reflect the same devotion to precise transcription as in his drawings of wayside plants. On the thickly wooded creek he discovered “at every turn scenes of beauty to delight the observer.”
