Label TextThe nilgai, or blue bull, is a bluish-gray antelope native to India. The male, as shown in this sculpture, has small horns and a tuft of long hair at the throat. Choate probably had an opportunity to observe the animal in 1932 on one of his trips to Africa. The original plaster of this work was included in a one-artist exhibition of Choate's sculptures at the Durand Ruel Galleries in New York in 1934.
