Label TextThe National Academy has a large collection of Danforth's academic drawings among its holdings. These were given to the institution by the artist's descendents. Danforth was a founding member of the New York Drawing Association and its offspring, the National Academy of Design.

In 1826 Danforth went to England, and remained for ten years. "Silenus and the Infant Bacchus" was created during a period of study at the Royal Academy in London. From the beginning, the practice of drawing from antique casts was the basis of instruction in the European academies, as it was at the schools of the National Academy.
