Label TextAccording to an inscription on the back, this drawing after the classical Apollo Belvedere, the widely-accepted epitome of ideal masculine youth and beauty, was made from a plaster cast while Danforth was a student at the Royal Academy in London. The drawing's masterful tonal gradations, strong proportions, and full conception illustrate the artist's growing confidence and technical mastery during his years of study abroad as well as the influence of classical models on American artists' study of the figure.
