Label TextMoran was encouraged to take up etching by her husband, the painter and printmaker Thomas Moran. She became one of the leading members of the American etching movement. Because she often worked directly on her etching plate while on site, her works frequently have the spontaneous quality of quick sketches. For this print, she captured in her typical style a scene in Manhattan during a time when one could come upon vegetable gardens and shanties bordered by row houses.
