Label TextSuydam was an active Academy member. From his first appearance in an annual exhibition in 1856, he contributed works to every annual through the year of his death. He was elected to the Council for the 1863-64 and 1864-65 terms and was treasurer of the Fellowship Fund Committee, a successful fund-raising program initiated in 1863 to finance construction of the organization's new home at Fourth Avenue and Twenty-third Street. His role in that project led to his being named treasurer of the Academy in the spring of 1865, to succeed the retiring Thomas Seir Cummings. His term was soon cut short by his untimely and-for the local art world-shocking death in September. At the Council meeting of October 9, 1865, John F. Kensett submitted resolutions eulogizing Suydam as "one of our most valued and efficient members and officers whose true love of art and zealous devotion to the interests of the Academy have been long and worthily proved.... [W]e will ever cherish his name in our memories as a precious example of a good and honorable man, a true artist, an accomplished gentleman and faithful friend."
