Label TextWhen Suydam was elected to full membership in the National Academy of Design in May 1861, he donated this painting to the Academy to represent his work. This view along the coast in Beverly, Massachusetts relates to John F. Kensett's depictions of the same area and illustrates their close working relationship. Suydam's composition, however, differs from Kensett's approach in its richly layered use of color to evoke the filtered light of a morning fog.
